GOAL SETTING THAT WORKS
Goal setting is a good start on trying to change from negative to positive. Of course, self-esteem is super important but I need more. I need to set goals too. I find that things keep building up and get feeling so overwhelmed. If I set small goals for myself I can sometimes combat that feeling of total uselessness. Which in turn defeats my self-esteem.
By making small goals I can make small boosts to my self-esteem as I accomplish them. I try not to make it too hard to attain. This can set me up for failure. My first goal should be to select something easy to strive for. Each goal I achieve brings me closer to the larger goal.
Remember, long term goals are reached by easy little steps. Start slowly - I have to make them something I am sure I can accomplish. What it is about my life I'd like to change.
Goal setting is a step by step process. By taking baby steps we can inch forward to our ultimate goal. As we reach our little goals we get a sense of self-satisfaction, self-esteem, and self-motivation. All extremely important to hold your enthusiasm and help you to continue on your positive way.
Also, remember, that if you set your goals too high you are bound to fail. A failure at the beginning could sap your confidence and motivation. If you keep your goals small (but directed towards the ultimate goal)you will achieve a sense of confidence and motivation to continue on to the next step.
By breaking larger goals into little pieces it will be easier to attain your long-term goal. If you have low energy and motivation the smaller baby step goals attained will give you more motivation to continue on. Don't expect as much of yourself in the beginning, the way to get motivated is to allow yourself to start slowly.
To do all this stuff I must take my time. It's not a race. I am going to be making changes gradually.
Okay, well first I must get my bearings and maybe make some goals.
Yup, Goals - life goals or something less lofty? Well, goals specific to my illness would be nice. Something like goals to ease the interpersonal chaos I feel all the time with relationships. That would be a good start because I have to be a hermit.
What goes with interpersonal chaos?
1). Panic and anxiety.
2). Unstable relationships and maintaining them
3). Being me- self idenity
4). Emotional sensitivity
5). Moodiness
7). Chronic depression
8). Anger
9). Feelings of dread over something bad happening
10). Suicidal ideations
12). Substance abuse
13). Mixed perceptions
15). Emptiness
11). Reckless behaviour
16). Attempts to avoid abandonment.
17). Delusions
Do any of these fit you? I fit them all but the last two. At least I haven't noticed those things yet because they scare me.
You must have things about yourself that you would like to change. Take a while a make a list of things then read on.
What I Would Like to Change
Take a look at your list of problems you created. Take the problem that is the easiest to make changes on. Something you really care about. Try not to make your choice overwhelmingly hard. You will be setting yourself up for failure. So pick an easy one.
Forget about all the other problems on the list for now and focus on your selcted problem. Write it down on a piece of paper.
Problem #1 is:_____________________________________________________________________
If this is something you do not like about your life try to rewrite it to say what you would like instead. For example:
If you wrote, I am alone and never go out, perhaps you could rewrite it to say: I would like to go out more.
I would like:__________________________________________________________________________
That's all there is to this little exercise. Now try to do this for each one of the problems on your list. Doing it this way it changes the problem into a goal. And with a goal we have something to work with.
