Breaking It Down
       Now that you have each problem turned into a goal, the next step is to break your problem into little pieces. If you chose I hate my job as your problem we could look at the dynamics that make up that statement. Ask yourself why you hate your job and make another list (My favorite occupation - writing lists - yeah I know but it helps to see things in black and white). The list could contain sentences like:

I hate my work

I avoid the boss,
I hate my coworker,
I hate one of my duties,
no promotion in the forseeable future,
need a raise,
job is too far from home.
I never go out

I have no firends anymore
I can't afford a baby-sitter
I'd rather watch tv
No one will like me
I won't fit in
I hate bars


    Now that you have created your list, go over it again and put a check mark beside the patrs you would like to work on first. Think of things that might help. In the examples above #1. I hate my work... you could work on the part that says "The job is too far from home". #2 I never go out.. you could work on the part about I can't afford a baby-sitter. Problem solving again.

Listen to audiobooks in the car or on the bus
Try another route
Move closer to work
Ask to work at home 1 day a week.
Change working hours to avoid traffic
Change to branch closer to home
I can't afford a baby-sitter

Cut back in othjer areas to save money
Socialize with other moms
Trade babysitting services with neighbour
Ask Relatives to sit
Have friends in


    Once you select an action you have to decide if it is reasonably easy to carry out. Remember: If you have been stuck on this problem for a while, you will have to start slowly. Then ask yourself, Is this course of action likely to help with the problem. It won't solve the problem completely, but it should take one step towards solving it.

    You should be very specific when selecting an action. Do you know exactly what you are supposed to do? If not, work at defining exactly how you are going to carry out your action. Be as clear as you can.

    Will you know if you have succeeded. You will have to decide in advance what you will call a success. If your goal was to swim 10 laps and you only swam 5.. is the fact that you made 5 laps a success in itself and the next 5 laps another goal down the road? Remember: Don't set yourself up to fail. Make your actions specific and your goals obtainable. Your goal should be something you can control. It's your action's not anyone else's. Define success according to your actions, success is measured by whether you did what you had planned.

    It is easier to control your actions thatn your thoughts and emotions. Your goal should do something in particular, not to think or feel a certain way while you are doing it. Suppose you were going to the dentist. Don't make a plan of action to feel good at the dentist, a better plan would be to make your appointment regardless of how you feel.

    Avoid setting goals that are doomed to failure. Like buying a years subscription to a gym and planning to attend twice a week. Is this realistic to your lifestyle? Maybe a more realistic goal would be to make your way to the fitness center and picking up a brochure... remember, baby steps... one little step at a time.
